Rock Tumbling Media
Mixtures of ceramic shapes are the latest thing in rock tumbling! They do three things really well. First, they act as a cushion (just like plastic pellets) but because they are so hard, the Silicon Carbide grit does not embed in the shapes and thus, the shapes can move through the stages right along with your rocks. Second, they are perfect to make up lost volume due to the abrasion process. Third, they create a perfect "balanced load", even if you have only one or two rocks in the tumbler! Now, when you have only one cabochon to polish, simply throw it in with the shapes and watch it shine!
Just one caution: Brand new ceramic shapes have rough edges from the factory--don't use them in a polish stage until you have tumbled them for 2 days in 80-grit Silicon Carbide powder with normal water. After this break-in period, your polished rocks can't be scratched by the shapes.

Polypropylene pellets have been used for many years to cushion loads of softer materials like obsidian. They tend to embed with Silicon Carbide particles, so they may be re-used only with the same size grit. Pellets used with 80-mesh SiC thus should not be used with 220-mesh, or 600-grit--they may be reused with 80-mesh grit, however.
